At NC State, our aim is to ready future environmental health scientists to tackle todays research challenges at the molecular, individual and population health levels and apply this knowledge to prevent and/or reduce adverse impacts on human and environmental health.

Comprehensive Training For the Next Generation of Toxicologists

Our students benefit from highly-coordinated graduate programs that provide comprehensive training towards careers in toxicology and environmental health science. Students are trained to be adept at conducting high impact EHS research, communicate effectively to a wide variety of audiences, and work as part of multidisciplinary teams. A synergistic mix of toxicological specialties among the faculty enables us to provide our students with the rich and diverse learning environment for which we are so well regarded.

We offer students a comprehensive program of course work and research opportunities that reflects the multidisciplinary nature of toxicology. Students benefit from a well-coordinated program and will be able to draw upon the resources of other departments within NC State University and nearby institutions in the Research Triangle Park.

Graduates of the Toxicology program go on to successful careers in academia, industry and government.

Collaborative Research

Toxicology/Environmental Health Sciences education and research at NC State has never been stronger as evidenced by the renewal of our NIEHS EHS Core Center (P30) and the recent award of a Superfund Research Program (SRP) (P42).

These centers serve to facilitate collaborations among participating mentors and students and provide access to cutting-edge institutional infrastructure and financial support to advance toxicology research at NC State.

Both centers serve as an extraordinary resource for students through access to core facilities, sponsored symposia, seminars, workshops and professional development opportunities.

Professional Development

Professional development occurs throughout your time in the toxicology program. Built within our core curriculum, student take several professional development classes including:

  • Responsible Conduct in Science
  • Research Communications
  • Basic Scripting in R
  • Methods for Enhancing Reproducibility
  • Grant Writing

Additionally, the NCSU Graduate School offers professional development programs to enhance graduate student and postdoctoral success by providing academic and career support, mentoring, and co-curricular experiences. The Graduate School’s signature Professional Development programs help you develop a foundation for long-term scholarly and professional success. They offer innovative programs for careers in industry and academia as well as writing, teaching, and research support to enrich your personal and professional satisfaction during your time at NC State and beyond.
